For GIMMIK, a specialist RC model store, we combined Linux server administration with support for its Windows Active Directory domain and workstations. These services were delivered on behalf of KK Media.

Supporting the store and day-to-day operations

The company’s requirements extended beyond maintaining its website. The scope also included a dozen or so domain-connected workstations and printers across several locations. We centralised printer management through a print server, with software distribution and updates forming part of the support.

The work also covered server software optimisation, securing backups, antivirus protection and firewall administration. Ongoing support included responding to incidents within the agreed response time.

Migrating several connected systems

One completed stage of the cooperation was moving the environment to a new server. This included the online store, an integration application, a WMS and a blog. Such a migration requires attention to dependencies between applications, databases and scheduled tasks.

We prepared database exports and imports, adjusted application settings and synchronised files. The switchover also covered domains and scheduled tasks. Once the target environment was running, we stopped the services being replaced on the old server.

Why maintain the environment as a whole?

The store, backend systems and employee workstations contribute to the same business processes. This project demonstrates the scope needed to support them together, from server and application configuration to printing, updates and user requests.
